2016 Highlights

The risks of implementing new regulations, diversity in the in-house teams and competitive salaries were all on the agenda at The Lawyer’s recent GC Strategy Summit in Portugal. The two-day summit began with an interview with UDG Healthcare head of legal Clare Bates, who talked about the importance of the legal function as an ethical force within a business, capable of safeguarding its reputation.

Risk is sexy

Risk and the implementation of new regulation can be daunting for both businesses and their in-house teams, but panellists argued that every risk provides a new opportunity. “Risk is sexy,” one panellist said, adding that it can be the most interesting and challenging part of being a general counsel and identifying risk could be turned into an opportunity to innovate.

The development of business skills, implementing technology and solutions to the resources problem caused by tightening legal budgets were three key focus areas identified by in-house lawyers as the most important in their strategies.

Retaining talent

On day two the focus turned to career development and diversity. In a panel session looking at how to motivate your team and build career path, general counsel spoke about their own experiences and how they structured their teams to encourage talent retention. The summit also heard from SRA chief executive Paul Philip, who spoke about the way the profession has developed and the growth of the in-house community.

The event concluded with a lively debate about diversity and how GCs can encourage diversity of all types within their teams. Despite widespread adoption of flexible working practices among delegates, there was an acknowledgement that at senior level in-house women and minority groups were still under-represented.

“It was my first time at the summit and I was delighted to find that it fulfilled my expectations. It was a wonderful opportunity to be out of the box and have the opportunity to share and learn. It gave me new ideas of how to improve and the opportunity to network among peers always helps to put our problems into perspective.”
